This is no ale of singular dimension, for double doesn’t just mean double the hops, but double the malt in our book. Malt--Two-Row, Munich, Rye Malt and Flaked Barley
Hops--Sorachi Ace, German Magnum, Cascade, Mt Hood, Wilamette, Dry Hopped with Mt Hood and Cascade

My Thoughts: This beer pours a very bright orange and is somewhat cloudy. The white head lasts a good portion of the drink and leaves nice lacing. The smell was not as strong as other DIPA.. A mild pine hop presence is accompanied by a mild lemon and citrus smell. The nose isn't all hops, there is a slight sugar sweetness as well. The taste starts off both sweet and hoppy. Citrus flavors are abundant but are balanced by a somewhat bolder sweetness that remains with you mid drink. The first half of this drink I didn't really know what to think because the flavors of bitterness and sweetness seemed to be going at eat other. The second half of the drink made a little more sense of the beer for me. The bitterness came out more at the end and left a slight dryness on the palate. The body was medium thanks to the abundance of malt used and the carbonation was also a little higher than average. Drinkability for me was good. I didn't mind the after taste and the ABV was noticeable, but not off putting for me. This isn't the best DIPA I've had, but it is far from the worst. It is worth a buy if you see it. I would like to see what this beer tastes like on draft.

I found a bottle of this on the "bargain bin" shelf at a local wine shop. The label said it was a 2008 bottling, and with the high ABV, I thought might have found a bargain of a nicely aged DIPA.
ReplyDeleteAfter pouring it last night, I thought the taste might be off because it didn't taste like a typical DIPA. However, I've never tasted it fresh, so I didn't have a reference point.
But after reading your review, I realized that the taste profile was very similar to what you describe, with possibly a mellowing of the hoppiness. It definitely finished better than it started.
After reading your review, I think I will go back and grab the other two bottles, if they're still there. All in all, I found it enjoyable, and that's all that matters.
