Weissenohe Monk's Christmas

Here is what the Brewer Says:
(I couldn't find much information on this brew.) A traditional German style Christmas beer brewed by monk's in an abbey founded in 1692.  A spiced dunkel at 5.1% ABV

The description at the bar read: Dark rich brownish-red color with a nice off white head.  Big caramel flavors with some hints of milk chocolate.

My Thoughts:  This beer did pour exactly as described.  A very dark brown with a hint of red and an off white head.  So far the description is spot on and the beer looks appealing.  The smell however quickly turns my thoughts from good to questionable.  Sweet, sweet and more sweet pour off this beer to my nose.  There is also a subtle spicy note to the smell.   The taste gets even worse for me.  Overly sweet malt quickly rushes in and doesn't go away.  I didn't get an ounce of hop anywhere in this beer.  I also didn't get any caramel and zero chocolate anywhere in this drink.  To confirm this a friend also go the beer and his thoughts mirrored mine.  If you like a ultra sweet and somewhat thick and highly carbonated brew then by all means go for it.   I could barely finish one of these..in fact if I wasn't reviewing it I would have never finished it!

  1. That's a shame. I usually love dark beers, especially the Germans. Glad I dodged a bullet on this one.

  2. Just because you do not have the palate for such a beer, does not mean you need to rate it poorly. Just because YOU do not like it does not mean it is bad, just not for you.

  3. Anonymous I don't understand what you are saying at all.

You don't want me to rate a beer poorly if I don't like it? What would you have me do...Lie about the taste and the drinkability and say I like it?

In my review I simply tell you the honest truth about each catagory.

My Rating is just that....My Personal Rating.
