21st Amendment Brewery Back in Black IPA

Here is what the Brewer Says:
Inspired by Paul Revere's midnight ride, we rebelled against the British style IPA, embraced the more aggressive American version and then recast it in bold, brave, defiant black. Our Black IPA is a Declaration of Independence from the tyranny of the expected.

Back in Black is our newest year-round beer available now in six pack cans and on draft. Brewed like an American IPA but with the addition of rich, dark malts, this beer has all the flavor and hop character you expect with a smooth, mellow finish.

My Thoughts: The Pour on this brew as you can expect was very dark black.   Out of the can there was  good amount of light brown head.  The smell was of faint roasted caramel and coffee, but also a little hop bite to it.  The taste of this brew is excellent the whole way through.  I liked the sweet roasted malt, caramel and coffee flavors that hit you up front.  The middle and end is where the hops came in to just give it a slight hint of bitterness that really brought everything into balance.   The body on this dark beer remains medium as does the carbonation even thought it looks a little thicker.  Overall this is a well done black IPA that is a very drinkable brew.  A nice twist on hops!

My Rating: Overall 83.75/100

  1. Glad you liked it! I'll have to try it. I have to admit, I like the idea of beer in a can, but have been disappointed so far with their offerings. Brew Free or Die IPA was pretty good, but I could not finish Hell or High Watermelon and am not really impressed with the Fireside Chat, especially with Christmas Ale and 12 Dogs of Christmas available here. I have some of the Fireside Chat left if you want to try it.
