Lagunitas Brown Shugga'

Here is what the Brewer Says:
Brown Shugga was originally a failed attempt to make our Olde GnarlyWine Ale way back in 1997. Boatloads of Brown Sugar were added to the boil in an attempt to rescue the batch. The result was quite different from the Olde GnarlyWine we were looking for, but the Accidental Release of Brown Shugga that year was the beginning of an annual rampage caused by a beer that follows no style guidelines and can best be described as.... Irresponsible.

My Thoughts:  This beer poured a very rich caramel brown color with head that quickly went away but left lots of spotty lacing.  The smell was as the name suggests full of brown sugar, some pine, and a hint of alcohol.   The nose continues right into the taste.  Rich and sweet brown sugar and a good bit of sweet malt hit you up front.  As the drink continues some hops come out to play on that sweetness and gives you a nice balanced finish.  The carbonation is low and the body is rich and creamy.  This is a sipping beer.  The ABV is near 10% and you can taste it for sure, but it is by no means off-putting.   I could easily drink 2-3 of these at a nice slow casual pace, but after that it might get a little too sweet.

Serving Type: Draft

My Rating: Overall 80/100

  1. These beer was a great surprise to my husband and I. Neither of us are fans of the really sweet beers, so I wouldn't have tried this on my own. However, thanks to the great samples offered at Heinen's every weekend, we tasted it for a quarter. A coin well spent, as it turns out. We bought a 6 pack that day, and have really been enjoying the bottles!

Lagunitas doesn't get a ton of attention in the craft beer world, but I've enjoyed every beer I've tasted from them.
