Bear Republic Brewery Big Bear Black Stout

Here is what the Brewer says:
Big Bear is a big, black, stout you can really sink your teeth into. The bold, roasty, caramel malt flavor is balanced by Centennial and Cascade hops.
ABV: 8.1% IBU: 55
My Thoughts: This beer poured black.  There was a large amount of foamy head that quickly dissipated, but didn't completely go away.  The smell was of roasted malt, coffee/espresso, dark chocolate with a slight hint of hops!  The smell alone is excellent and really builds up positive hope for this brew.  The flavor of this very dark beer was wonderful...my nose didn't lead me astray.  The roasted malt, espresso and a hint of bourbon flavors all greet your palate very kindly.  The end of the drink introduces some hops into the equation which helps to balance out this brew. In the end you are left with a wonderfully tasty black stout.  As full bodied as this may look, it isn't nearly as thick tasting as I expected after seeing/smelling it.  The carbonation and hops that were added to this stout play so well with the malt, espresso and bourbon flavors!  What Bear Republic has made is a highly drinkable, high ABV stout that doesn't fill you up too quickly and leaves you wanting a 2nd, or 3rd glass!!  I highly recommend trying this, especially if you see it on draft! (I found this at Ballentine in Willoughby, OH.)

My Rating: Overall 90/100
look: 4.5 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | drink: 4.5
