Hoppin' Frog--Frog's Hollow Double Pumpkin Ale - Craft Beer Review #156

Here is what the Brewer says:
There’s a place just south they call Frog’s Hollow, with cauldrons afire in Fall, and they only speak in whispers of the name. There’s a brewery they say who has the secret, of spices picked just right. With a crying shout, they’ll knock it out, and hand you this Frog’s delight.
Recipe Information: Style: Double Pumpkin Ale, ABV: 8.4%,  IBU: 7.3
Serving Suggestions: Preferred Glass: Pint Glass,  Preferred Serving Temperature: 45-50°F, Cellaring Notes: Enjoy within 180 days
My Thoughts:
Appearance:  This beer poured a rich copper color, but was nearly translucent.  It poured with almost no head to speak of, and what it did have disappeared quickly.  There was no lacing at all while drinking this brew.

Smell:  The nose on this beer was very pleasing.   Rich scents of pumpkin, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg and clove all came through.  I thought this beer had a very balanced smell and wasn't too over the top in terms of spice.

Taste:  Every single smell I detected came through in the flavor.  The first sip leads you down a pumpkin and cinnamon road, but quickly turns and the nutmeg and clove join the ride.  The after taste leave you with a pumpkin and all spice flavor that lingers on for just a bit.  I though the flavors in this brew were well balanced throughout.  This was one of the best tasting pumpkin beers I had the pleasure of tasting all year.

Mouthfeel:  This beer has a sticky mouthfeel but remains rather light in the body.  The carbonation level was also on the lighter side.  If I had to change anything about this brew I could have used just a bit more body to compliment the rest of the mouthfeel and flavors.

Drinkability:  At 8.4% this brew weighs in pretty strong and therefore I couldn't see myself drinking more than two of these in any sitting.  That being said, the lighter body and great flavor does make you want to try!
Serving Type: 22oz bottle
My Rating: Overall 100/100
Look:4.4 | Smell:4.6 | Taste:4.6 | MouthFeel:4.2 | Drinkability:4.4

  1. An absolute favorite of mine this time of year! It's quickly become a necessary part of our Thanksgiving meal and it ages especially well, too.
