Willoughby Brewing Hopnotic Imperial Red Rye IPA - Craft Beer Review #129

Here is what the Brewer says:
This beer was specially brewed for the International Beer Fest at the IX center back in May.  It weighs in at 9%ABV and 87 IBU.
My Thoughts:
Hopnotic pours a hazy copper/caramel color with minimal head.  It does retain nice lacing throughout.  The smell is of bold citrus and grapefruit with a hint of pine that pair wonderfully with the malty rye/bready sweetness.  The flavor is up-front and bold right from the start.  Citrus hops explode on your palate but are quickly balanced, like the nose suggested, by a mildly sweet rye backbone.   The hops in this beer are huge, but never are overpowering to the point where they are unfriendly.  The end taste you are left with is a perfectly balanced bitterness that lingers on and makes you want to have another sip.  The mouthfeel on this brew is a little sticky with medium body and carbonation.  This beer is super drinkable, to the point that I've taken a few growlers home of this wonderful brew.   Just know ahead of time that this is not a session beer because the 9%ABV will sneak up on you rather quickly!  Hopnotic won't be on tap much longer at Willoughby Brewing Company, but have no fear, they will be brewing it again in late July!
Serving Type: 10oz Draft
My Rating: Overall 98.5/100
Look: 5 | Smell: 5 | Taste: 5 | MouthFeel: 4.75 | Drinkability: 4.75

  1. This is tasting really good. They had some on tap at Ballantine. Tastes very favorably with Bear Republic Hop Rod.
