Sierra Nevada Hoptimum

Here is what the Brewer says:
A group of hop-heads and publicans challenged our Beer Camp brewers to push the extremes of whole-cone hop brewing. The result is this: a 100 IBU, whole-cone hurricane of flavor.
Simply put —Hoptimum: the biggest whole-cone IPA we have ever produced. Aggressively hopped, dry-hopped, AND torpedoed with our exclusive new hop varieties for ultra-intense flavors and aromas. Resinous "new-school" and exclusive hop varieties carry the bold and aromatic nose. The flavor follows the aroma with layers of aggressive hoppiness, featuring notes of grapefruit rind, rose, lilac, cedar, and tropical fruit—all culminating in a dry and lasting finish.

My Thoughts:  This beer poured a slightly darker amber color with an off white head that was pretty foamy at first, but quickly reduced to only a small amount of head.   The smell was only slightly hoppy.  Pine came out more strongly to my nose than the citrus.  The smell was good, but nothing that really made me say wow.  The taste takes a different turn than the nose lead me to believe.   The initial flavor was of strong pine.  While the middle of this drink continued the pine theme, the sweeter side of this brew also came out along with a very strong alcohol taste. The 10.4%ABV is not masked in this brew by any means. Citrus, grassy, and fresh earthy hops are present, but to me the pine flavor dominated the overall flavor.  The end of the drink left the back of my throat bitter and somewhat dry.  Carbonation was a little higher than average while body was average.  I liked this beer but I don't think it lived up to the hype and the ultra limited availability.  I was fine with drinking the 22oz bottle but wasn't really dying to have more at the end of it.

Serving Type: 22oz Bottle

My Rating: Overall 82.75/100
look: 4.5 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25| drink: 4
